Neurodiversity & Faith
What is neurodiversity?
Neurodiversity has become a popular term in recent years. It most commonly is used to describe people who were born or acquired issues that cause them to think differently like:
- Autism
- ADHD
- Dyslexia & dysgraphia
- Tourette’s Syndrome
- Intellectual disabilities
- Traumatic Brain Injuries
- Some mental illnesses
- and other learning disabilities
Our brains are complex machines…
I don’t claim to be an expert in neurodiversity, but I live with it daily. For 19 years, I’ve taught neurodiverse students in grades K-8 in both regular and special education classes. For the last 10 years of my teaching career, I taught students with significant disabilities and autism.
I also live with neurodiversity at home. Over twenty years ago, I was in a car accident where I received a traumatic brain injury that changed the way I think. I met my husband, who has worked hard to overcome a learning disability, while we were both working towards our master’s degrees in seminary. Eleven years ago, we were blessed with a son who is on the high-functioning end of the autism spectrum. A few years later we were blessed to adopt our daughter, who has ADHD.
What you’ll find…
On this site, I’ll share what I’ve learned about neurodiversity, and what God is teaching me, as well as share information about the Think A Little Different children’s chapter books I’ve written with the help of my kids.
As a teacher and a mom surrounded by neurodiversity, I’ve learned a lot along the way. Hopefully, everyone who reads this will find encouragement and insight into how some of our neurodiverse kids and adults think and function. Every neurodiverse person is different. The information provided is not meant to be used to replace a professional diagnosis or course of treatment. The ideas and information presented are meant to be a tool to help you understand and enjoy the neurodiverse people in your life.
